Tips on Conversation Openers

While most of us would try almost everything to meet someone by going to a party, club, places of interest or a pub but there are very few of us who really prepare for it. What will happen when you really meet someone special at the party that you join? How do you start a conversation that give a good impression?

Starting a conversation with someone you do not know is often very intimidating especially if you are a shy type. If you planned to meet someone, then obviously you need to learn how to open up a conversation as you cannot always wait for the other person to approach or strike a conversation. Regardless of whether you are a guy or gal, it does not matter, as long as you open the conversation correctly, you improve the chances by 50% or more.

Below are some of the tips you can use in order to start a good conversation.

i) Observation

The first half an hour of observing comes in handy as you may want to observe what catches the attention of the opposite party. The clothes that he/she wears including color, brand, type and etc. Pay attention and take note of the conversation type that took place within the person and the others. For example, he/she maybe talking about cars, fashions or sports and this will give you some hint on his/her hobbies. The rule her is to look for clue that can help you you break the ice.

ii) Timing of the conversation

After the careful observation. you may want to find the right timing and subject to start the conversation. You can make a comment about what people have been doing, the food, the music, or just “It’s a lovely (party, evening, house, picture) isn’t it?” Or compliment something about the person: “What a great (tie, pin, dress, shoes, T-shirt, color, design) – I like it because…” He or she will probably say “thank you,” but also respond with some information. If the answer is, “Thank you, I got it in Paris,” you’ve hit paydirt. You can keep him or her talking all night about Paris….

iii) Avoid killer/cold opening

You must not start your conversation with a close ended question that invites yes or no as an answer or single word answer. For example, this is a nice party isn't it or what is the time now? Avoid lame pickup line that is not attractive or which annoys the opposite party. For example, your opening conversation shouldn’t be a “line” like “what’s a nice girl (or guy) like you doing in a place like this?” or “what’s your sign?” These sorts of clichés don’t make a good impression. Keep your statement simple, and as relevant to the time, the place, and the person you’re talking to as possible. Ask a question about where something is, or who someone nearby is, or what’s been going on.

 iv) Listen with your heart

If you strike the conversation right, you will be greeted with a warm response and this is where your listening skill comes to work. If your companion gives you any information at all, respond to it. Let him or her know you’re listening by making an interested comment. If the person doesn’t respond to your first or second try at conversation, do not try further as he/she may not be interested at all.

 v) Good self introduction

One of the easiest way to strike a conversation is to introduce yourself to a group if your know the topic and start the conversation. It will be even better if you know someone else at the party, you can ask for information about someone you don’t know, or even ask for an introduction.
